Gender-Affirming Resources From Our Community

We here at Candelaria LLP keep track of trends in the law that may affect our clients, with a keen eye towards cultural competency and equality. We received a note from a class that they found our blog from 2023 on LGBTQIA+ Resources to be an excellent resource.

A student from the class shared two additional resources that she hoped we would share:

1. Finding Your True Voice: A Guide to Gender-Affirming Verbal Communication

Gender-affirming verbal communication involves aligning one's speech patterns and language with their gender identity, particularly for transgender and gender-diverse individuals. This practice ensures that a person's voice, words, and non-verbal cues authentically reflect their gender, thereby validating their identity and supporting their well-being.

Key components of gender-affirming verbal communication include:

Vocal Characteristics: Modifying aspects such as pitch, resonance, and intonation to match one's gender identity.

Language Patterns: Adopting speech styles and expressions that resonate with the individual's self-identified gender.

Non-Verbal Cues: Adjusting body language, facial expressions, and gestures to align with one's gender expression.

Engaging in gender-affirming verbal communication can enhance self-confidence, reduce gender dysphoria, and improve overall quality of life by ensuring congruence between one's identity and outward expression.

2. A Nurse’s Comprehensive Guide to Gender-Affirming Care

This article provides an in-depth exploration of the essential aspects nurse practitioners should consider when delivering care to transgender and gender non-conforming (GNC) individuals.

Key Components:

  • Terminologies and Definitions: Understanding the correct language and terms related to gender identity is crucial for effective communication and respectful care.

  • Healthcare Issues: Transgender and GNC individuals often face unique health challenges, including limited access to competent care and higher risks of mental health issues.

  • Gender-Affirming Treatments: These may involve hormone therapies and surgical interventions tailored to align an individual's physical characteristics with their gender identity.

  • Nursing Care Approaches: Providing respectful, informed, and individualized care plans that address the specific needs of transgender and GNC patients is essential.

This guide emphasizes the importance of nurse practitioners being well-informed and sensitive to the unique needs of transgender and GNC individuals to provide effective and compassionate care.

We hope you will find this insightful information helpful. Thank you so much to Ms. Elizabeth for reaching out and telling us about her class and to Ashley for sharing these resources!

These resources show that there is great power in words, just as there is great power in advocacy. We are happy to support her students and our community by sharing this update on our website.
